WhatsApp May Introduce Smart Text Shortcuts on Android and iPhone
WhatsApp is reportedly working on a feature that could make daily chats simpler for both Android and iPhone users. As reported by WABetaInfo WhatsApp is slowly rolling out a feature called Message Text Actions also known as Smart Text Actions. This feature is designed to recognise information, in messages and offer actions without requiring users to exit the app.

The feature can find details such as phone numbers, dates, addresses and email IDs, inside messages. Once the feature spots them WhatsApp gives actions that let users use the information right from the conversation. The update is expected to save time especially when users need to make calls save contact details add events or find locations.
How WhatsApp’s Message Text Actions feature works
The new feature scans supported text formats automatically in every outgoing message.
When WhatsApp identifies a phone number, date, address or email ID WhatsApp places an underline beneath the recognised text. When a user taps the section the underlined section opens a small pop-up menu. The detected information appears at the top allowing a user to check whether WhatsApp has correctly identified the text before a user selects an action.
Shortcuts available for types of information
WhatsApp is expected to offer different actions depending on the information detected in a conversation.
• Phone numbers: Users can copy a number save it to their contacts or make a call through their carrier. For business numbers they may also be able to view business information.
• Times: The shortcut allows users to copy a date add it to their calendar or create an event directly within WhatsApp.
• Addresses: of manually copying a location users can open the detected address directly in their preferred maps application.
• Email addresses: Users can copy the email ID or open it directly in their default mail application.
WABetaInfo noted that some of these options were already available in WhatsApp.
Privacy and end-to-end encryption
WhatsApp is also reportedly keeping privacy considerations in mind while developing the feature. According to WABetaInfo, text detection takes place entirely on the device using pattern-matching rules. This means the message content and suggested actions are not sent to WhatsApp’s servers.
The app may ask users whether a particular shortcut was helpful. If they select that it was not useful, they can indicate whether the text was identified incorrectly or the suggested action was unnecessary. This feedback reportedly sends only a flag to WhatsApp, not the actual message content. The feature, therefore, does not affect the platform’s end-to-end encryption.
When will the feature be available?
The Message Text Actions feature is currently being rolled out to a limited number of users running the latest versions of WhatsApp on Android and iOS. A wider rollout is expected in the coming weeks, although the company has not announced an official release date.
