Spanish footballer dies after fatal on-field collision with goalkeeper during match

New Delhi: In a tragic incident, Spanish footballer Jesus de Miguel passed away after suffering a serious injury on the pitch while playing for his club Tenerife in the Spanish second division. The striker got injured after a fatal collision with the opposition goalkeeper during the game.

De Miguel collided with goalkeeper Jesus Owono towards the end of the game and suffered head and chest injuries. Owono was sent off for his challenge, which proved fatal. De Miguel was taken to a hospital for treatment after the injury on Monday, and his condition was described as ‘stable but serious’.

However, his condition deteriorated during treatment, leading to the 30-year-old footballer’s death. “Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda,” Tenerife said in a statement.

“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can lessen this overwhelming sadness. We stand with his grieving family, with his loved ones, with all of Tenerife who mourn this cruel loss today,” added the club.

The fatal challenge that took De Miguel’s life

The incident took place seven minutes into the stoppage time with Tenerife drawing 2-2 against Andorra in the Spanish second division. Andorra goalkeeper Owono ran towards the centre circle in a bid to clear a long ball when he collided with De Miguel.

Owono’s knee took De Miguel down, and the striker lay motionless on the pitch while getting treatment by the medical staff. He was immediately stretchered off the ground and taken to a hospital in an ambulance. Meanwhile, Owono was shown a red card for his challenge before the referee decided to call off the match.

Players from both teams appeared visibly distressed as De Miguel lay motionless on the ground after the challenge, prompting the organisers to abandon the game. As per a report in Spanish publication Mara, De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest on his way to the hospital in the ambulance.

“With broken hearts and devastated, we want to send our most sincere condolences to the family of Jesus de Miguel, to all his teammates, friends, and to CD Tenerife,” Andorra said in a statement.

Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, who co-owns Andorra and La Liga president Javier Tebas also expressed their condolence for De Miguel. The 30-year-old started his career with Leganes in 2015 and played for eight different clubs in Spain. He joined Tenerife on a three-year deal in 2025 and had 11 goals to his name in 29 appearances for the club.

De Miguel is survived by his 1-year-old daughter, Carla de Miguel Fernandez.
