Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana gets major anti-piracy protection from Bombay High Court

New Delhi: With just days to go before its theatrical release, Nitesh Tiwari’s : Rise of a Legend has received major legal protection against online piracy. The Bombay High Court has granted a dynamic ad interim injunction to prevent unauthorised recording, uploading, streaming and distribution of the much-awaited film.
The order comes after the film’s copyright holder, Godpower Media Private Limited, approached the court expressing concerns over possible copyright violations and the circulation of unauthorised footage online. The company told the court that the first instalment of the ambitious two-part epic has been made on a budget of approximately Rs 2,000 crore, making the protection particularly significant for the makers.
Justice Madhav Jamdar passed the order on Monday (November 2) restraining unidentified individuals, commonly referred to as ‘John Doe’ entities, and digital platforms from exploiting the film’s copyrighted material without permission.
Bombay High Court grants dynamic injunction to Ramayana
The court’s order aims to prevent the film from falling victim to piracy, particularly as its worldwide theatrical release approaches. The injunction covers not just the complete film but also its underlying script, characters, footage, lyrics and sound recordings.
A dynamic injunction is significant because it allows the copyright holder to seek action against newly identified infringing links and mirror websites as they emerge, rather than having to approach the court afresh every time pirated content appears online.
The court has also directed internet service providers (ISPs) and social media intermediaries to block or remove infringing links and mirror websites once they receive written notice from Godpower Media.
In its observations, the court acknowledged the possibility of unauthorised recordings being uploaded and circulated across digital platforms. Justice Jamdar noted that the plaintiff had a real and well-founded apprehension that the film, or portions of it, could be recorded and made available to the public without permission.
Ramayana trailers were leaked despite strict security measures
According to the submissions made before the court, two trailers were secretly recorded during invite-only preview screenings and subsequently circulated across digital networks. This reportedly happened despite strict non-disclosure agreements and confidentiality measures imposed on those attending the screenings.
The makers feared that similar incidents could occur once the film reached theatres, with unauthorised recordings potentially finding their way onto websites, social media platforms and other online channels. Godpower Media therefore sought broader protection to prevent the film and its associated creative material from being copied, distributed or commercially exploited without authorisation.
During the hearing, lawyers representing Google LLC and other global social media intermediaries informed the court that they had no objection to the proposed interim protection. They also assured the court that they would take prompt action once specific infringing links were brought to their attention.
Under the directions, Godpower Media will share the URLs carrying unauthorised material with the concerned platforms and internet service providers. They will then be required to block access to or remove the infringing content, including mirror links.
The matter is scheduled to come up for further hearing on December 16, while the interim protection will remain in force until then.
