Golden Globes controversy: Horror film Obsession submitted as comedy, sparks ‘category fraud’ debate
New Delhi: The is facing questions over its musical or comedy categories after Curry Barker’s horror film Obsession was submitted for consideration in the comedy race. Focus Features entered the film in the category despite its disturbing storyline, which centres on a woman losing control over her own mind and body. The submission has also put breakout star Inde Navarrette in contention for the comedy actress category.

The debate has renewed concerns about category fraud during awards season, when studios and campaign teams choose classifications they believe could improve their chances of winning. According to a report by Variety, the issue extends beyond Obsession, with Mike Leigh’s Tender Loving Care also submitted in the musical or comedy categories despite dealing with ageing parents and other serious themes. The discussion raises a key question, should a film qualify as a comedy simply because it contains a few humorous moments?
Why Obsession sparked a debate?
Although has a few funny moments, it is mainly a psychological horror film. Similarly, Tender Loving Care has scenes of singing and dancing, but it also deals with ageing parents and family struggles. Both films have raised questions about whether a movie should be called a comedy just because it has some funny scenes. Awards strategists may see category placement as a way to improve a film’s prospects, but questionable submissions can invite criticism from voters and industry observers.

What do the Golden Globes rules say?
The Golden Globes rules state that films primarily intended to have a serious or dramatic tone should compete in the drama category, even if they contain comedic elements. The organisation reserves the right to make the final decision through a committee that reviews disputes over genre classifications and acting categories. Its decisions are made at its discretion and cannot be appealed.
Previous cases have shown how such classifications can influence awards campaigns. Ridley Scott’s The Martian won the Golden Globe for best motion picture in the comedy category, while Get Out was submitted as a comedy in 2017. In 2020, Promising Young Woman was moved to the drama category after its original classification was challenged.
Musical films face classification challenge
Musical films can also face scrutiny over their category placement. In recent years, the Golden Globes has emphasised that songs should advance the story rather than simply recreate performances. This distinction saw Bohemian Rhapsody and Elvis compete in the drama category.
The classification of Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic starring Jaafar Jackson, could raise a similar question. The film features recreations of the singer’s well-known performances, but its placement may depend on whether the musical sequences contribute to the narrative or primarily showcase his songs.
