Nitish Reddy in, Arshdeep Singh out? India coach hints at changes for 3rd ODI vs Afghanistan

New Delhi: India are likely to make a few changes to their playing XI for the third and final against Afghanistan in Chennai after already securing the series with a 2-0 lead. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed that KL Rahul will continue to bat in the middle order while opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to get another opportunity at the top.

Speaking ahead of the match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Ten Doeschate said the team management remains keen to assess different combinations before upcoming international assignments. He indicated that Jaiswal would likely continue alongside Rohit Sharma despite a disappointing outing in the previous game.

Ten Doeschate revealed that some players could be rested after strong performances in the first two ODIs. After missing the second ODI in Lucknow due to soreness, Nitish Reddy is available for selection while Arshdeep Singh could be rested for the dead rubber after his impressive form throughout the series.

“Someone like Arshdeep has bowled very well in the first two games; he can probably take a rest tomorrow, and the same goes for one of the batters. We’ll swap them out and go back to playing a slightly different side,” said Ten Doeschate.

Ten Doeschate on Gill and Ishan’s fitness updates

The former Netherlands player also provided fitness updates on captain Shubman Gill and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kisan. Gill experienced cramping during the second ODI while Kishan had a minor shoulder concern but both are now fit and available for selection.

The assistant coach also praised Kisan for adapting his game beyond the T20 format. The coach said the left-hander has shown he can build an innings in ODI cricket while still maintaining his natural attacking approach.

Jaiswal faces strong competition

Ten Doeschate acknowledged that faces a tough challenge in establishing himself in India’s ODI setup due to the depth of batting options available. While the young opener remains highly rated, opportunities are limited and performances will be crucial whenever he gets a chance.

With Kisan’s return and century in Lucknow and Virat Kohli expected to reclaim the No.3 spot once fit, it will be highly difficult for Jaiswal to grab a spot in a highly competitive batting lineup.

Ten Doeschate also praised Nitish Reddy, describing him as an important all-round option for India’s future plans. He also believes that the youngster is developing into a strong backup for Hardik Pandya and can play a significant role in white-ball cricket.

The coach also expressed satisfaction with India’s emerging pace resources. With senior bowlers unavailable for the series, he said the performances of younger fast bowlers have been encouraging and highlighted the strength of India’s growing talent pool.

India will now aim to complete a clean sweep against Afghanistan before turning their attention to the upcoming tours of Ireland and England.
