iPhone 18 Pro price leak: Apple may hike India price by Rs 20,000, here’s why

New Delhi: Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro series could arrive in September, following the company’s usual launch timeline. Apple hasn’t announced when the new Pro versions will be available, but there are rumours that they will be revealed in the second week of September. The phones are expected to be supported by iOS 27, along with new hardware.

The bigger talking point, however, could be the price. The reports indicate that the price of the iPhone 18 Pro in India could be as high as Rs 20,000 more than the iPhone 17 Pro, which starts from Rs 134,900. This may drive up the opening price to the tune of Rs 154,900. There are also rumours of a $200-$300 price hike in the U.S.

A20 Pro chip could bring major performance

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro will come with the A20 Pro chipset, which is based on the 2nm process by TSMC. The smaller process will be better for performance and power efficiency. There’s also a possibility of improved thermal management, possibly based on a vapour chamber that could help Apple when there are tougher tasks at hand like gaming and AI.

Variable aperture could improve camera control

The primary 48 MP Fusion camera might apparently be supplied with a variable aperture. This would enable the lens to regulate how much light gets into the sensor. In a practical way, it could impact the photography of other lighting scenarios and provide more control to users.

Bigger battery and smaller Dynamic Island

The Pro models are also expected to get larger batteries. The iPhone 18 Pro Max might be able to go beyond 5,400mAh, with the Pro version potentially also seeing a boost.

Apple may also reduce the size of the Dynamic Island by relocating the parts for the Face ID under the display. The phones will be 6.3 and 6.9 inches.

The C2 modem could be released with the iPhone 18 Pro. It is expected to enhance the performance and power efficiency of 5G. There may also be some benefits for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth that come with a new N2 chip.

Is the price hike justified?

If the reported 38 per cent rise in manufacturing costs, linked partly to memory prices and the more expensive 2nm chip, is accurate, a price increase would not be surprising. However, a Rs 20,000 jump is significant. In my view, Apple will need to deliver meaningful camera, battery and performance gains for buyers to see the iPhone 18 Pro as a genuine upgrade rather than simply a more expensive flagship. Apple has not said any more about these specifications and prices. The reports should therefore be considered rumours until confirmed by the company.
