West Indies miss direct qualification for 2027 ODI World Cup, Afghanistan secure automatic berth

New Delhi: West Indies missed out on the direct spot for the after slipping to the tenth spot in the current ICC ODI rankings. The two-time champions will now have to battle it out in the qualifiers to earn a spot in the World Cup next year. The top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings as of September 30, along with hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, will directly qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

West Indies slipped to the tenth spot after Afghanistan defeated Ireland by three wickets in the third ODI in Belfast to go 2-0 up in the five-match series and enter the top eight in the ICC ODI rankings. West Indies slipped to the tenth spot and are now outside of the automatic qualification process.

West Indies have two ODI matches remaining against India before the cut-off date of September 30. However, even if they manage to win both games, it won’t be enough to help them secure an automatic qualification berth for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The two-time champions will now have to play in the qualifiers to secure a spot in the showpiece event.

What will the qualifier route for West Indies for 2027 ODI World Cup?

West Indies and Ireland, the two bottom-ranked full member nations, will now join eight other teams in the ten-team qualifier for the 2027 ODI World Cup. They will be joined by the top four teams from the Cricket World Cup League 2 and the top four teams from the ICC Qualifier Playoff, which will feature the bottom four teams from League 2 and four teams from the Challenge League.

The winner of the ten-team Qualifier will book a spot in the 2nd round of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Three of the remaining top four teams will play each other in a three-team Super Series, and the winner of the event will make it to the second round. West Indies missed out on playing the 2023 ODI World Cup after failing to navigate the qualification process.

It was the first time in their history that the two-time champions didn’t take part in an ODI World Cup. They will be hoping to not repeat their mistakes from the past this time around and secure qualification through the Qualifiers.

Afghanistan secure direct spot in 2027 ODI World Cup

Meanwhile, Afghanistan clinched the direct spot in the 2027 ODI World Cup after beating Ireland by three wickets in the 3rd ODI between the two teams in Belfast on Monday. Afghanistan chased down the target of 207 runs in 44.5 overs after facing early stutters to bag their second win in a row in the series and meet the automatic qualification criteria for the World Cup next year.
