‘Govt ready for discussion’: Rijiju says Home Minister Amit Shah to speak in Lok Sabha on students stir

New Delhi: The Government on Monday said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah would speak in the Lok Sabha on the use of lathicharge on students during the recent protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and other parts of the country. Speaker Om Birla is yet to allot him time to speak.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the government was ready to speak on the student stir in different parts of the country. He asked the Opposition to listen to Shah when he speaks.

What Kiren Rijiju said?

“”Govt ready for discussion in Lok Sabha on student stir in different parts of the country. Home Minister Amit Shah will reply to debate on students’ agitation but the Opposition will have to listen peacefully. The Opposition first takes part in the debate and then runs away from the House without listening to the reply,” news agency PTI quoted Rijiju as saying.

He added further on the Amit Shah’s speech, “This is not acceptable; they have to listen. Opposition can’t run away from govt reply on the students’ stir by creating turmoil. This is not acceptable; they have to assure us.”

Kharge reiterated demand for Amit Shah’s statement

Earlier in the day, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge reiterated the demand for Amit Shah to make a statement in the House. He said, “Our demand in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha is simply that Amit Shah should come to the House and present his views. For 17 days, we have been making every effort to get him to come to the House and make a statement regarding the injustice inflicted upon the students.”

Kharge further added, “Why are you ignoring the House? It implies that you are disrespecting the representatives elected by the people. We want Amit Shah to come and deliver his statement, but he does not want the House to function smoothly and peacefully.”
