ED chief Rahul Navin gets one-year extension, to remain in office until August 2027

New Delhi: The Centre has granted Enforcement Directorate (ED) chief Rahul Navin a one-year extension, allowing him to remain in office until August 13, 2027.

His fixed two-year tenure was due to end on August 13, 2026. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his continuation for another year, according to an order issued on Sunday. and reported the extension.

Service beyond retirement

Navin is scheduled to retire from government service on July 31, 2027. The order allows him to continue as ED director beyond that date until the completion of his extended tenure.

Under the rules governing the post, the government can appoint an ED director for an initial term of two years. It can then grant up to three extensions of one year each.

The 59-year-old officer belongs to the 1993 batch of the Indian Revenue Service in the Income Tax cadre. He became the full-time ED director on August 14, 2024.

Focus on financial crimes

During Navin’s tenure, the ED has investigated several cases involving allegations of fraud by real estate companies against homebuyers. The agency has also used provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act to restore attached assets worth crores of rupees to victims, according to PTI. Navin has more than 30 years of experience in the Income Tax Department and specialises in international taxation.

Education and tax career

A native of Bihar, Navin holds B.Tech and M.Tech degrees from IIT Kanpur. He also earned an MBA from Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. From 2004 to 2008, he worked with the International Taxation Directorate in Mumbai. He later served as Commissioner of Transfer Pricing between November 2015 and November 2017.Navin also completed two assignments with the Central Board of Direct Taxes in its tax policy and foreign tax divisions.

Rise within ED

Navin joined the ED as an officer on special duty in November 2019 to assist with India’s mutual evaluation by the Financial Action Task Force. He became Special Director at the ED headquarters in November 2020. He coordinated money laundering investigations, international cooperation and treaty-based asset recovery. Navin assumed charge as the ED’s in-charge director on September 15, 2023, before his appointment as its full-time chief in August 2024.
