Former TMC MLA Sanat Dey arrested over extortion, land grabbing charges

New Delhi: Former Naihati MLA and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sanat Dey was arrested by police on Saturday morning following serious allegations of extortion, intimidation, and forcibly seizing lands. Acting on a secret tip-off, police conducted a raid in Duttapukur to apprehend Dey, who had been evading authorities. He was subsequently brought to the Naihati Police Station.

Dey, who won the Naihati Assembly seat in the 2024 by-election, has been facing multiple criminal allegations for a long time. Apart from extortion and land grabbing charges, he was also accused in connection with the post-poll violence following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Local residents had previously alleged that Dey operated a reign of terror across the Naihati region and issued threats prior to election results. Public discontent against the former lawmaker recently boiled over; last June, Dey faced severe public wrath when local residents hurled eggs at him and raised “chor, chor” (thief, thief) slogans while he was heading to a local party office.

Prior to Saturday’s arrest, police had raided Dey’s residence and pharmacy, but he was untraceable at the time. Following his arrest in Duttapukur today, police are preparing to produce him before the Barrackpore Court.
