Food Safety officials raid five-star hotels in city

Bengaluru: Food Safety Department officials conducted surprise inspections at several five-star hotels in Bengaluru on Friday to verify compliance with food quality, hygiene and storage standards. The special drive was launched following directions from Health Minister U T Khader.

More than 30 food safety officials inspected kitchens, food preparation areas and storage facilities at leading hotels, including Shangri-La and The Lalit Ashok. During the inspection at Shangri-La, officials reportedly found poor-quality vegetables, rotten onions and potatoes. Samples were collected and sent to a laboratory for detailed analysis.

Officials also seized samples of suspected food additives, including substances believed to contain monosodium glutamate (Ajinomoto), for laboratory testing. The inspections at The Lalit Ashok focused on food preparation practices, storage conditions and overall sanitation.

Authorities said the exercise was aimed at ensuring that even premium hotels strictly adhere to food safety norms. Action, if any, will be initiated only after laboratory reports confirm violations of food safety regulations.
