You have to wait sometimes: Shreyas Iyer reveals message to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi amid lack of chances
New Delhi: Team India skipper Shreyas Iyer said Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to wait for his chances as he opened up on how he deals with the 15-year-old. Many have called for the talented youngster’s inclusion in the playing XI in T20Is amid lack of chances for him.

Sooryavanshi was left on the bench in all five matches as India continued with the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma in the recently concluded T20I series against . The 15-year-old was kept waiting despite inconsistent returns from Samson and Abhishek.
Speaking after the 5th T20I between the two sides was washed out on Saturday, Iyer said Sooryavanshi will have to be consistent with his process, and his chance would arrive. He shared the details of the conversation he has had with the teenage sensation.
“I just keep telling him you will get the opportunity, if you be consistent about your processes, you have to wait sometimes, we have got two fantastic openers, that’s the conversation we have been having with Vaibhav,” said Shreyas after the washed-out 5th T20I.
Iyer echoes head coach Gambhir’s message
Iyer echoed Gautam Gambhir’s message when asked about Sooryavanshi. Last month India head coach Gambhir was asked about the 15-year-old’s absence from India’s playing XI in T20Is. The India head coach at the time said that Sooryavanshi will have to wait for his chances.
Gambhir said India have a formidable opening pair in Samson and Abhishek, who have delivered consistently in the past and that the team management will continue to back the duo. He acknowledged Sooryavanshi’s talent but insisted his time will come.
“From Vaibhav’s point of view, it is again a very clear conversation that he has to wait for his opportunity. We know the kind of talent he has. We know what he can do. But again, someone who done extremely well over a period of years obviously will always be ahead of someone who has got into the team. Whenever he gets that chance, you will get a longer run as well,” said Gambhir.
“And that is what Indian cricket is all about. We want competition, we want that talent in the dressing room. But sometimes that’s how cricket goes. Whether it is a 15-year-old or a 30-year-old, you have to wait for opportunity,” he added.
