Work on overall fitness: VVS Laxman advises Vaibhav Sooryavanshi amid stellar run for India

New Delhi: Former India batter VVS Laxman, who served as the interim head coach of the Indian team in their recently concluded tour of Zimbabwe, has urged to work on his overall fitness. 15-year-old Sooryavanshi enjoyed a brilliant outing in the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, finishing as the highest run-getter with 151 runs in three games.

The teenage sensation slammed a sensational knock of 81 runs off 49 balls in the against the hosts at the Harare Sports Club in Harare on Sunday to help India win the game by 35 runs and clean sweep the series 3-0. Sooryavanshi notched up his second T20I fifty in the game to become the first player in history to have two fifty-plus scores before turning 16 in international cricket.

The opening batter slammed a blistering half-century in the series opener at the same venue to play his role in India’s victory before notching up his second fifty en route to his 81-run knock on Sunday. Laxman, who is serving as India’s interim coach in the absence of Gautam Gambhir, lauded Sooryavanshi for his batting heroics.

However, he admitted Sooryavanshi needs to work on his overall fitness to improve as a player and contribute for the team in every department.

“One of the areas which we want him to get better and work on is his overall fitness. We have to also remember that he’s just 15 years old. He’s a very young boy. And he himself wants to get better in every aspect of the game,” Laxman said after India won the 3rd T20I on Sunday to clean sweep the series.

Laxman revealed how Sooryavanshi was eager to continue on the field despite having picked up an injury niggle while fielding during the third T20I. However, he was taken off the field on the advice of the BCCI medical team.

“And if you see it, even today’s game, he was taking the hot spot. Even though he got injured, he still wanted to be on the field. But it was our physio who actually asked him to come out. So that’s the eagerness and the earnestness he has to do and contribute in every possible way to the team,” said Laxman.
