Wings Over Ganga: Indian Air Force Brings Its Aerial Display to Varanasi

Varanasi, one of India’s most historic and culturally significant cities, is hosting a major aerial display by the Indian Air Force (IAF) under the theme “Wings Over Ganges.” The event, titled Indian Air Force Aerial Display 2026, is part of the celebrations marking the 94th anniversary of the Air Force, which was established on 8 October 1932.

The display brings together fighter aircraft, helicopters, transport aircraft and specialist aerobatic teams against the distinctive backdrop of the Ganga and Varanasi’s celebrated riverfront. According to the Ministry of Defence, the event is intended to showcase the precision, discipline and professionalism of the IAF while bringing its capabilities closer to the public.

An aerial showcase of India’s air power

The event will be held at Namo Ghat in Varanasi on 22, 24 and 25 October 2026. Visitors will get to see fighter jets, helicopters and other aircraft perform exciting flying displays.

One of the main attractions will be the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team, which will fly nine Hawk Mk132 aircraft. The team will perform impressive formations, including loops, barrel rolls and inverted flying, with saffron, white and green smoke representing the Indian tricolour.

The Sarang Helicopter Display Team will also perform coordinated manoeuvres, showcasing the skill and precision of helicopter flying.

How Big is the Airshow?

The event is undoubtedly substantial in scale. Approximately 94 aircraft are expected to participate. It is therefore a major Indian Air Force aerial display. The announced composition includes fighter aircraft, transport aircraft and helicopters.

The fighter aircraft expected to participate include, Rafale, Sukhoi -30 MKI, MiG-29, Mirage-2000, Jaguar and LCA Tejas. The wider display is expected to include transport and special-mission aircraft such as the C-17, C-130J, C-295, An-32, IL-76 and IL-78, alongside helicopters including the Light Combat Helicopter Prachand, Chinook, Apache and ALH variants.

The Suryakiran team’s nine Hawk Mk132 aircraft have been specifically confirmed.

The participation of aircraft associated with the Indian Army and Indian Navy has also been reported, demonstrating the joint character of the planned display.

Why Indian Air Force Aerial Display?

The aerial display serves several purposes. First, it commemorates the Indian Air Force’s long history of service and recognises the personnel who maintain India’s air-defence and operational capabilities.

Second, it provides an opportunity for the public to understand the skills and technology involved in modern military aviation. The aircraft themselves are only one part of the picture: successful aerial operations also depend on trained aircrew, engineers, technicians, controllers and ground-support teams.

Third, the event can inspire young people to explore careers in aviation, aerospace engineering and the armed forces. MoD specifically identifies inspiring young Indians and bringing the Air Force closer to the public as the objective.

Finally, the participation of indigenous aircraft such as Tejas highlights India’s broader efforts to strengthen domestic aerospace development and manufacturing.

Who is expected to attend?

The programme is expected to draw spectators from Varanasi and neighbouring areas, alongside aviation enthusiasts and students. It is estimated that between 15 lakh and 20 lakh spectators could attend across the event.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior political and defence dignitaries are expected at the concluding programme on 25 October.

The airshow will bring modern military aircraft into the skies above this historic river, creating a unique combination of India’s cultural heritage and modern defence capabilities.

What message does Wings Over Ganges convey?

The event communicates a message of preparedness, professionalism, teamwork and national service.

The aircraft also represent years of technological development, maintenance and operational preparation. Together, these elements illustrate the human effort behind the spectacle.

The event also seeks to strengthen the connection between the armed forces and the public.

Its significance extends beyond the spectacle of fighter jets and aerobatic formations. The event honours the Air Force’s service, highlights modern and indigenous aviation technology, encourages young people to explore aerospace careers and connects a national institution with the cultural identity of Kashi.

The sight of aircraft flying above the Ganga brings these themes together: national service, technological progress and India’s enduring cultural heritage.
