Why must foreign travelers hire a local driver rather than self-drive the car?
Indian roads are often unpredictable and diverse. What is more challenging is that the person who is driving the car must know very well the indian city roads and the traffic, shortcuts, and if they are driving in remote areas of India, they should have a good idea of rural routes and mountain paths, and they should be able to navigate on any terrain. Only good drivers who have knowledge of the local roads, which might be very familiar to them as they frequently take these roads for travel purposes.

For foreign travellers it would be definitely a daunting task because solely they cannot rely on Google Maps and if they do not have both local experience of driving in Indian remote villages and they do not have much idea about local awareness. Sometimes you need to stop when it is dark because sometimes you need to drive from the forest area or sometimes there might be fear of thieves, robbers of Nexalites.
On the other hand, hiring an Indian driver offers a structured as well as relaxed experience. A professional driver will be able to understand better local roads, traffic behavior, and will have good route planning, thus allowing the foreign travellers to focus on enjoying their journey. This is especially valuable for those who are visiting multiple destinations, where navigation and timing play a very significant role.
Another significant factor is the purpose of travel. If the goal is to explore comfortably, visit multiple attractions, and enjoy the journey without much stress, a private car with a driver is definitely a better choice. Self driving might suit the experienced travellers who are much more confident in handling different driving environments, but it is not always practical for first-time visitors.
