West Bengal woman shocked after Rs 100 crore appears in bank account, seeks answers

New Delhi: A woman from Kulatali in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district was left in disbelief after she found nearly Rs 100 crore reflected in her bank account, prompting concern and confusion over the unexplained transaction.

The account holder, Kashmira Sheikh, lives in a modest asbestos-roofed house. While her husband works in Kolkata making bags, she earns a livelihood through zari embroidery work from home. Despite their modest means, the family was shocked to discover the enormous balance while checking the account.

According to Kashmira, she had visited the bank to verify whether the subsidy for her LPG cylinder had been credited. Instead, she found an amount close to Rs 100 crore displayed in her account.

Alarmed by the development, Kashmira and her husband approached the Jamtala branch of the state-owned bank in Kulatali to seek clarification. They alleged that bank officials did not provide an explanation and asked them to return home without addressing their concerns.

The family also claimed that their bank account has since been frozen, preventing them from accessing not only the unexpected amount but also their own deposited savings.

Speaking about the incident, Kashmira said she has no idea how the money appeared in her account and fears it could lead to legal or financial complications. “We are poor people who earn our livelihood through hard work. I had only gone to check whether my LPG subsidy had been credited, but instead I saw this huge amount. We are frightened because we don’t know what has happened,” she said.

The exact reason behind the appearance of the funds remains unclear. Bank authorities have not yet issued an official statement explaining the incident or the status of the account.
