Weak bones can go unnoticed for years: Warning signs you should not ignore

New Delhi: Weak bones are not always easy to spot. You can be fine for years and then suddenly have a problem when you break a bone. According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research, this was also seen in Indian men.

In one study, 14.6% of healthy adult men were found to have osteoporosis, and 50.3% had osteopenia, which is when bones have lower-than-normal density. These numbers are only for the people covered by the studies and not for all Indian men. But they also pose an important question: How many people are living with weak bones — and don’t know it?

What are the signs of weak bones?

Osteoporosis often develops without any obvious warning signs. Some people find out they have it only after a fall or a fracture. Persistent back pain, a loss of height over time or a stooped posture can sometimes point to a bone problem and should not be ignored.

Ageing is one factor that can affect bone strength, but it is not the only one. Other reasons for bone loss include poor nutrition, lack of exercise, hormonal changes and some drugs. Women are most at risk after the menopause, especially if it occurs before the age of 45.

Depending on age, medical history and risk factors, doctors may recommend a bone density test. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning is the most widely used method of measuring bone mineral density.

Can air pollution affect bone health?

For residents of Delhi-NCR, winter pollution makes it difficult to exercise outdoors. There may be less physical activity for people because they walk less and exercise outdoors less. You have to keep moving regularly to keep the bones strong.

Research is also being conducted on the link between lower bone density and long-term exposure to fine particles like PM2.5. But association doesn’t mean air pollution directly causes osteoporosis.

What can people do to keep their bones healthy?

Healthy eating and daily habits help keep your bones strong. Protein helps support bones and muscles, and calcium and vitamin D are important. Additionally, weight-bearing activities like walking and strength training can help maintain bone strength and balance.

On days with high pollution, it may be more practical to exercise inside. People can also lower their risk of falling by taking mini breaks from sitting for long periods and making their homes safer.
