Watch: England gymnast Gabriel Langton suffers horrific fall at Commonwealth Games
New Delhi: England’s men’s gymnastics team endured a worrying moment during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after Gabriel Langton suffered a heavy fall in the team final on Friday. The 19-year-old was taken to hospital after crashing headfirst from the horizontal bar, leaving athletes and spectators inside the arena in shock.

Langton lost his grip during England’s final rotation and landed awkwardly on the floor. Medical staff rushed to help him immediately, with the competition stopped for several minutes while he received treatment. He was unable to leave the floor on his own and was placed on a stretcher with head and neck support before being taken to hospital.
The incident overshadowed what had been an important day for England, who were chasing a fourth straight Commonwealth Games men’s team title.

Team puts competition aside
Langton had been called into the squad as a replacement for injured six-time Olympic medallist Max Whitlock. Despite the emotional setback, England completed the competition and eventually won the silver medal, finishing behind Canada, while Australia claimed bronze.
Speaking after the event, teammate Luke Whitehouse said everyone was thinking about Langton rather than the result. “From what we’ve heard, he’s doing OK. Gymnastics is such a dangerous sport and things like this remind us of that. It’s one of those things you have to put out of your mind.”
Positive update brings relief
Team England later confirmed that Langton was conscious, talking and moving while being assessed in hospital. The team also thanked the medical staff for their quick response following the accident.
A day later, British Gymnastics provided more encouraging news. The governing body said Langton underwent several scans, which produced “very positive” results. He was cleared of any serious injury complications and discharged from hospital to return to the team hotel where he will remain under the care of Team England’s medical staff.
Although Langton missed the medal ceremony, the positive update was the biggest relief for England after a frightening day in Glasgow.
