Three bronze medals lift India’s tally to six at U23 World Wrestling Championships

Hyderabad: India’s freestyle squad turned things around on the final day of the U23 World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, winning all three of their medal matches to sign off with three bronze medals and take India’s total tally to six.

Rohit, Jaskaran and Chandermohan ensured that none of the Indians who reached the medal rounds went home empty-handed.

In the 65kg category, competing in his first major international tournament in four years, the third-ranked Indian domestic grappler showed grit and excellent mat awareness to outlast Belarus’s Magomedkhan Magamedkhanov 8-5 in a tough, physical bout.

In the 79kg weight class, Chandermohan pulled off a major result by defeating last year’s U23 World silver medallist, Ibrahim Metehan Yaprak of Turkiye. Staying patient and disciplined in defence, Chandermohan controlled the pace to secure a 5-2 win.

Earlier, in the 57kg division, Rohit fought his way through the repechage rounds and made full use of his second chance, defeating Armenia’s Arman Harutyunyan 8-3 to seal India’s third bronze medal of the evening.

The three medal wins gave India a strong finish to a tough campaign in Las Vegas, highlighting the young wrestlers’ character after their earlier semifinal losses.

India wrapped up this edition of the U23 World Wrestling Championships with six medals in total — two silver and four bronze.
