Terrorists attack non-local workers in J&K’s Kulgam; one killed, another injured

New Delhi: One non-local worker was killed and another injured after terrorists opened fire on them in the Kellam area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Friday.

Officials said the injured workers were taken to a nearby hospital, where one of them succumbed to his injuries. The other worker was later shifted to Government Medical College, Anantnag, for specialised treatment.

Jammu and Kashmir Police said security forces had cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to locate the attackers.

Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat briefed Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha about the attack. Sinha directed the police chief to ensure that the terrorists responsible were eliminated at the earliest.

The attack came less than 10 days after terrorists shot dead Head Constable Aashiq Hussain Qureshi in Anantnag town. The police officer was attacked around 12.30 pm at Lal Chowk while deployed on Amarnath Yatra security duty.

According to officials, Qureshi, bearing Belt No. 20, belonged to the Indian Reserve Police’s 3rd Battalion and was a resident of Beerwah in Budgam district.

The Kulgam shooting is the latest terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir following the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam massacre, in which 26 civilians were killed.
