Tension in Hyderabad after egg hurled near Durga immersion rally; 1 detained

New Delhi: Tension flared in Hyderabad’s Old City during the early hours of Sunday after an egg was allegedly hurled near a Durga idol immersion procession, sparking immediate protests by devotees and Hindu outfits who demanded the arrest of the culprits.

The incident occurred around 2 am within the Madannapet police limits when a procession, organised by the Veer Savarkar Nava Yuva Sangham, was moving through a neighbourhood lane. According to a police officer, an egg fell right near the gathering, triggering anger among participants.

Agitated devotees and local residents halted the procession and staged a sit-in at the spot. They were soon joined by BJP leaders, representatives of various Hindu organisations, and a large number of youth, who sang bhajans and held a dharna demanding strict action. To defuse the situation, police registered a case under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) which pertains to deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.

1 detained, police scour CCTV footage

Officers from the Madannapet police station reached the area shortly after the incident was reported to restore order. Senior police officials also arrived on the ground to speak with the organisers and assure them of an impartial investigation.

Authorities confirmed that one suspect has been taken into custody for questioning, while teams are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby houses and commercial establishments to trace everyone involved. Heavy police deployment was ordered across the area to prevent any flare-up, with officials stating that the situation has since turned peaceful and appealing to the public not to pay heed to rumours.

BJP alleges systematic targeting of festivals

The incident quickly triggered political reactions from the opposition. BJP spokesperson Veerender Yadav alleged that miscreants were deliberately targeting Hindu community festivals and processions in the city to provoke unrest.

Yadav also hit out at the local law enforcement, claiming that police had been overly restrictive and had resorted to lathi charges during religious processions across Hyderabad. Meanwhile, community members and procession organisers reiterated that they would keep pressing for strict legal action against those attempting to disturb public harmony.
