SIR exercise to continue in Delhi, Mumbai till August 17 – Know the new voter verification dates

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (EC) has extended the timeline for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Delhi. The door-to-door verification of the voters will continue till August 17, said the Commission. The final electoral rolls for the city are set to be published on October 27, reported Times Now.

Second extension this month in Delhi

This is the second extension granted for the SIR exercise, by the Commission this month. Originally the door-to-door verification exercise was to end on August 8. The draft voter roll will also now be published on August 24, instead of August 17, as was announced earlier.

Following the publication of the draft rolls, the voters can file their claims and raise objections, between August 24 to September 23, 2026. Earlier this claim filing period was between August 17 to September 16, 2026.

The claims and objections will then be disposed of by the officials, till October 22, 2026. The final voter list is scheduled to be published on October 27. Earlier, the date for this was October 19.

So far nearly 1.45 crore voters in Delhi have received enumeration forms from their respective BLOs. Over 62 per cent of the filled forms have already been digitised.

The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer said that the extension was meant to give some more time to voters in the national capital for submitting their enumeration forms. He also clarified that the process of digitising the filled up forms was a little slower here, due to certain reasons. He requested that those voters who have till now not submitted their forms, must do it at the earliest.

Talking about the delays in digitisation, the official said that BLOs have complained that several people have not returned the forms provided to them after filling them up. Apart from this, the other reasons cited for the delay are, errors in details provided by the voters, technical issues, difficulty in finding voter details previously recorded.

The process of digitisation of the electoral rolls in Delhi, began on June 30, 2026. The BLOs started distributing enumeration forms on this date.

Mumbai SIR exercise timeline also extended

Apart from Delhi, in Mumbai also the timeline for completing the SIR exercise has been extended. The EC extended the timeline for the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Maharashtra. They said that door-to-door verification of booth level workers would continue till August 17.

Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer said that the order was issued on a request by the state CEO and would apply to the SIR exercise scheduled to be completed by October 1, 2026.

The house-to-house verification of voters will continue till August 17. It began on June 30 and was earlier scheduled to end on August 8.

This is the second extension granted to voters in Mumbai. Earlier, the EC was forced to extend the exercise as heavy rains in the state disrupted the verification exercise.

In Mumbai alone 10,000 BLOs are involved in the SIR exercise. Each of them are tasked with verifying 900 to 1,200 voters. The draft electoral rolls will be published in the state on August 24. Voters can raise objections and claims till September 23.
