Assam floods: Death toll reaches 75, CM announces Rs 9 lakh compensation

New Delhi: The death toll in the severe Assam floods has climbed to 75 after seven more drowning deaths were reported from Sivasagar district.

According to the latest government report released on Tuesday, July 28, floods are currently affecting seven districts: Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sonitpur, and Kamrup (Metropolitan).

Over 3.3 lakh people affected

The report highlights that 332,639 people across 622 villages in 21 revenue circles are currently affected by the deluge. The disaster has also damaged the agriculture sector, submerging over 45,341 hectares of farmland.

Water levels remain high across major rivers, with the Dhansiri River at Numaligarh continuing to flow above the danger level. However, no river has crossed its historical highest flood level mark so far.

Increased Financial Aid and Simpler Compensation Rules

Following the rise in fatalities, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a comprehensive relief package for flood-affected families. “We will leave no stone unturned to support our people and help them rebuild their lives,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X.

Under the updated guidelines, the state government has removed the mandatory post-mortem requirement to claim the ₹4 lakh ex-gratia compensation for flood-related deaths. To further assist grieving families, the Chief Minister announced an additional ₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, raising total financial compensation to ₹9 lakh per family.

Families of individuals who remain missing for over 30 days will also be eligible to receive the ₹4 lakh ex-gratia payment.

Immediate Cash Support and Student Relief

The state will provide ₹15,000 in cash to more than 100,000 severely affected families to help cover immediate household needs.Payments under the Orunodoi welfare scheme will restart on August 1, offering beneficiaries in Charaideo, Jorhat, Golaghat, and Sivasagar a special monthly installment of ₹2,500.

Starting August 1, students in heavily impacted districts will receive book grants ranging from ₹1,000 for Higher Secondary students up to ₹5,000 for postgraduate students. The government will also provide free textbooks, financial help for uniforms, and free replacements for lost Class X and XII marksheets and certificates.
