‘No respect for law’: Delhi Court says CJP’s Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka deliberately breached bonds
New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday extended the judicial custody of Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka until October 21, saying they had shown “no respect for law” and deliberately breached bonds furnished earlier this month.

Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) Ritu Raj observed that the two had violated bonds submitted on October 11 before another magistrate and had “immediately committed the breach of peace in this case”.
Das and Ranka were produced before the court after spending five days in judicial custody. The court directed their counsel to file written submissions within two days and provide an advance copy to the investigating officer.
Court questions assurance against repeat offence
The magistrate said the assurance given by the two CJP leaders that they would not repeat the alleged offence did not inspire confidence, considering their past conduct and the material submitted by the investigating officer.
“Considering the imminent apprehension, past conduct of the respondent and the submissions advanced on both sides,” the SEM said, the respondents should be given an opportunity to present their arguments in writing.
The court also noted that the police application seeking an extension of custody contained substantial material raising concerns about a possible breach of peace and disturbance of public tranquillity.
“I find that the respondents have deliberately breached their Bonds dated 11.10.2026 as submitted before the Ld. SEM, South-West District and immediately committed the breach of peace in this case,” SEM Ritu Raj observed.
Defence seeks immediate release
Advocate Abhik Chimni, appearing alongside Pushp Sharma for Das and Ranka, sought their immediate release. The defence argued that the two had not called for protests after October 10 and that there was no reason to believe they would repeat the alleged offence.
Their lawyers also submitted that both individuals had gone to Jantar Mantar separately.
However, the court raised concerns over the suitability of the proposed sureties. One surety, Teerath, could not explain the mismatch between his photograph on the bond and his Aadhaar card or produce another valid identity document.
Another surety, Mannu Raj Anand, failed to provide basic details about Saurav Das, for whom he had offered to stand surety. The magistrate found that neither surety appeared capable of ensuring the respondents’ presence before the court and directed them to furnish fresh sureties.
The matter will be heard again on October 21 for further proceedings and any reply. On October 14, the court had remanded the two CJP leaders to five days of judicial custody.
