Meta’s Muse Spark Outperforms Gemini, and Alexandr Wang Has a Message for Google

They say “better late than never,” and that seems to be the case for Meta in the AI race. After trailing behind Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic, the company led by Mark Zuckerberg is finally gaining ground with its Muse Spark AI model. Muse Spark 1.1 has just outperformed Gemini’s top AI models in certain benchmarks, and to celebrate, Alexandr Wang shared a special message aimed at Google.

On X, AI expert Tae Kim posted a screenshot of a benchmark test from Artificial Analysis Intelligence. The chart shows Meta’s Muse Spark 1.1 outperforming Gemini 3.6 Flash, Google’s most advanced model to date.

Alexandr Wang, who leads Meta’s AI initiatives, shared the post and took the opportunity to take a jab at Google. He added: “Gemini, who?”

It is worth noting that Muse Spark 1.1 was trained in less than a year; Alexandr Wang joined Meta’s Superintelligence Labs (MSL) only last July. In other words, within that timeframe, Meta managed to train an AI model capable of outperforming Gemini.

Tae Kim wrote: “For Google to be outperformed by Alexandr Wang so quickly—when Meta’s new AI team is tiny by comparison—is absolutely embarrassing for Google.” Alexandr Wang joined Meta after Mark Zuckerberg paid over $14 billion to acquire his startup, Scale AI. Since joining, Wang has ramped up the company’s AI efforts following the launch of Meta’s Llama models (which feature open weights). Meta’s Llama AI models had failed to match those of its rivals, leaving the company at a disadvantage in the AI race. Although Muse Spark has managed to outperform Gemini, it still lags behind more advanced models from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Chinese open-weight models Kimi K3 and GLM 5.2 also achieve higher scores.

Muse Spark is the first AI model developed by Wang’s MSL team and was launched in April. Earlier this month, Meta released Muse Spark 1.1, with a particular focus on programming capabilities. The launch of Muse Spark 1.1 was significant enough that Mark Zuckerberg broke his hiatus from X to announce it.

Programming has become one of the most important areas for AI models as demand from enterprise users grows. Meta claims that Muse Spark 1.1 delivers solid programming performance at a lower cost than models from OpenAI or Anthropic.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that Google has delayed the launch of its Gemini 3.5 Pro AI model, allegedly because it failed to meet internal benchmarks for programming tasks.

In addition to Muse Spark, Meta has launched Muse Image, its new AI image generator. However, the generator sparked controversy because it initially allowed anyone to create AI-generated images featuring users with public Instagram accounts. Meta has since disabled this feature.
