Maharashtra bans non-dairy paneer, imposes 6 months jail, Rs 1 lakh fine for guilty

Mumbai: With an aim to stop the sale of adulterated dairy products, the Maharashtra government has banned the manufacture and sale of non-dairy paneer. In case if any violation, the authorities will impose a fine of Rs 1 lakh and six months’ imprisonment on those found guilty.

In case the consumption of adulterated Paneer results in death, the accused may face life imprisonment and a minimum fine of Rs 10 lakh. The ban order has been issued by Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. Under the order, the manufacture, processing, storage, packing, transportation, sale, distribution and offering for sale of analogue or non-dairy paneer have been prohibited in Maharashtra.

Sale of analogue paneer as dairy paneer may mislead consumers

In its order, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also warned that selling analogue paneer as dairy paneer may misled the consumers and encourage unfair practice under the food safety law. Notably, analogue paneer is made of vegetable fats or oils and other non-dairy ingredients . Even as such items may resemble dairy paneer, concerns have been raised over their consumption as dairy products.

As per FSSAI regulations, paneer must be made from milk. It should not have any added starch, non-dairy fats or synthetic elements. While the FSSAI permits the sale of analogue paneer, it has to be strictly informed.

Maharashtra Assembly called for complete ban last year

The issue reached the Maharashtra Assembly last year. At the time, members had called for a complete ban on analogue paneer. The order now completely bans the use of analog paneer across the state. The decision came amid a crackdown in Maharashtra.

Recently, during a raid in Pune’s Manjari Khurd, officials busted a fake paneer racket. They also seized around 1,400 kg of the product. The officials said that it was being manufactured using cheaper substitutes.
