But a sweeping new scientific review is turning that narrative on its head. After analysing more than 350 studies spanning animal experiments, human clinical trials and epidemiological research, scientists conclude that moderately restricting protein intake may improve metabolic health, slow biological ageing and potentially extend lifespan for many adults. However, experts stress that this is not a one-size-fits-all recommendation, and certain groups, including older adults and highly active individuals, may actually require higher protein intake.

Rather than focusing on a single experiment, the authors synthesized findings from over 350 scientific papers, making it one of the most comprehensive evaluations of protein restriction and longevity to date.
According to the researchers, consistently high protein intake, particularly in sedentary adults, may overstimulate nutrient-sensing pathways that evolved to promote growth and reproduction, but can also accelerate ageing when chronically activated. Conversely, reducing protein intake appears to trigger protective biological mechanisms associated with healthier ageing.
How eating less protein could slow ageing
The review highlights several biological processes that may explain why moderate protein restriction benefits health:
- Improves metabolism: Lower protein intake has been linked to better insulin sensitivity, improved blood sugar regulation and healthier energy metabolism.
- Reduces inflammation: Protein restriction appears to decrease chronic low-grade inflammation, a hallmark of ageing and many chronic diseases.
- Protects cells from damage: Researchers found evidence that lower protein intake may reduce oxidative stress and cellular damage.
- Activates longevity pathways: Cutting protein influences nutrient-sensing systems such as mTOR, IGF-1 and FGF21, pathways already known to regulate ageing, cellular repair and lifespan across multiple species.
- Supports healthier cellular function: Protein restriction may enhance stress resistance, improve autophagy (the body’s cellular “clean-up” process) and preserve normal cell function over time.
These mechanisms have repeatedly been observed in laboratory studies involving yeast, worms, flies, rodents and, increasingly, in controlled human studies examining metabolic health.
It’s not just about eating less; it’s also about the type of protein
Researchers emphasise that protein quality matters just as much as quantity.
Previous human studies suggest that diets rich in plant-based proteins, such as beans, lentils, soy products, nuts and whole grains are associated with lower risks of chronic disease than diets dominated by red and processed meats. Earlier landmark research also found that among adults aged 50–65, high intake of animal protein was linked to increased overall mortality and cancer risk, while plant-derived proteins did not show the same association.
Growing evidence also indicates that restricting specific amino acids, particularly methionine and branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), may deliver many of the metabolic benefits seen with broader protein restriction.
Does this mean everyone should cut protein
Despite the attention-grabbing headlines, scientists caution against interpreting the findings as a recommendation for universally low-protein diets.

- Producing hormones and enzymes
- Maintaining bone health
- Preventing age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia)
The review specifically notes that protein needs vary significantly depending on age, health status and physical activity levels. Older adults, athletes, people recovering from illness or surgery, and individuals with certain medical conditions often require higher, not lower, protein intake to preserve muscle mass and overall health.

The findings arrive amid an explosion of high-protein marketing. Supermarket shelves are increasingly stocked with protein-enriched yogurts, breakfast cereals, beverages, snacks and desserts, reinforcing the perception that “more protein is always better.”
Researchers argue that for many healthy, sedentary adults, this trend may encourage unnecessary overconsumption without providing additional health benefits. Instead, they advocate a more personalised approach that matches protein intake to an individual’s age, activity level and medical needs rather than following blanket high-protein recommendations.
The latest evidence doesn’t suggest that protein is harmful. Instead, it challenges the increasingly popular belief that more protein automatically equals better health.
For many adults, particularly those who are sedentary, moderating protein intake, prioritising plant-based protein sources and maintaining an overall balanced diet may support healthier ageing and better metabolic health. At the same time, protein requirements remain highly individual, and experts advise against making major dietary changes without considering factors such as age, activity level and medical history.
