Kharge’s ‘Modi Ka Baap Bhi Jayega’ remark sparks BJP backlash, Amit Shah hits back
New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his controversial remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late father at an event in Patna. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president Nitin Nabin accused the Congress of lowering political standards while the party demanded an apology from Kharge.

The controversy erupted during an event marking the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first Chief Minister, Shri Krishna Singh. While addressing the gathering, Kharge was interrupted by a man in the audience who reportedly said that Modi would not go anywhere.
Kharge responded, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega,” which translates to “Even Modi’s father will go”. He reportedly repeated the remark twice, triggering a commotion at the venue.
The man, identified as Santosh Kumar, was reportedly surrounded by people, beaten and later removed from the hall. However, Kumar subsequently claimed that he had said Modi would not leave unless there was a revolt and that his words had been misunderstood.
Amit Shah, Nitin Nabin attack Congress
Reacting to the incident, Shah accused Kharge of crossing the limits of political decorum by referring to the Prime Minister’s late father.
In a post on X, Shah alleged that the Congress had repeatedly used abusive language against Modi and his family. He cited previous remarks about Modi’s mother, references to him as a ‘merchant of death’ and the use of ‘chaiwala’ to mock his background.
“Under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, the Congress party keeps crossing the limits of indecency every day,” Shah said.

Nabin also condemned Kharge’s remarks, describing them as a sign of the Congress’s “ideological bankruptcy”. He alleged that the party was resorting to personal attacks because it lacked substantial issues to challenge the government on development, policies and welfare schemes.
The BJP described Kharge’s statement as shameful and demanded an apology. The party also announced plans for protests across the country over the remark.

More BJP leaders join attack
Several other BJP leaders criticised the Congress president. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accused the party of using personal attacks against Modi instead of challenging his policies. BJP spokesperson Tuhin A Sinha described Kharge’s comment as “disgusting, petulant, uncouth”.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said India was a democracy, not the Congress’s “darbaar” where leaders could abuse others at will.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh also targeted the Congress leadership, saying he had previously thought Rahul Gandhi was the only one making such remarks. He claimed Modi would remain in power for at least another 30 years.
Kharge targets Modi, RSS and Nitish Kumar
During his speech, Kharge accused Modi of failing to fulfil his promise to bring back black money within the first 100 days of his government and questioned where the money was.
He also criticised the RSS, alleging that its ideology encouraged communal divisions and stood in the way of peace and social harmony.
Kharge further questioned Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s alliance with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), saying it marked a departure from his socialist roots.
He also raised concerns over a reported purification ritual at a venue in Haldwani after a Congress rally, condemning untouchability and questioning how social unity could be achieved while such practices continued.
The exchange has intensified the political confrontation between the BJP and Congress with the row over Kharge’s remark now drawing attention away from the other issues raised during his Patna address.
