Jurgen Klopp officially named Germany head coach after Julian Nagelsmann’s exit
New Delhi: Jurgen Klopp has been officially named head coach after the national team’s disappointing campaign and the resignation of Julian Nagelsmann. The former Liverpool manager signed a contract to coach Germany through to the 2030 World Cup, the German soccer federation confirmed as he was presented at a news conference on Friday.
The former Liverpool manager will face a challenging start to his first national team role, with four Nations League matches scheduled in an 11-day period against the Netherlands, Greece and Serbia in late September and early October.
Former defender Per Mertesacker has also joined Klopp as the federation’s new managing director for sport, taking charge of the German men’s national teams and focusing on developing young talent into future senior stars. He will begin his role in January after spending eight years in charge of Arsenal’s academy.
‘The national team brings us Germans together’
Klopp has not worked in management after leaving Liverpool in 2024. He took over as Red Bull’s Head of Football in January 2025 and has been working as an analyst during the 2026 World Cup for Magenta TV. The German Football Association secured his release from Red Bull by making a €1 million donation to the company’s Wings for Life foundation and agreeing to host three international matches in Leipzig by 2030.
“It’s a big honor to be sitting here. I had an idea how big the job of national team coach is, but when you’re being directly connected with it, you really feel the scale and the responsibility even more. The national team brings us Germans together like almost nothing else can. That’s what makes this task so special for me,” Klopp said.
Paraguay defeated Germany in the round of 32, marking their third consecutive failure in the World Cup. They also have been out of the group stages in the 2022 and 2018 editions of the competition.
Nagelsmann stepped down after three years in charge of Germany. During his tenure, the national team reached in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024, where they were eliminated by Spain.
