iPhone 17 Becomes World’s Best-Selling Phone Ahead of iPhone 18 Pro Launch
The smartphone market might be having a year because of the ongoing memory crisis but Apple seems to be faring much better. Even though higher component costs and memory shortages are pushing phone prices up and hurting demand the iPhone 17 has kept selling. In fact a recent report from Counterpoint Research shows that Apple again had five iPhone models, in the world’s top 10 best-selling smartphones during the second quarter of 2026.

The iPhone 17 was number one making up 6% of all smartphone sales around the world for the quarter. Apple also had the third spots with the iPhone 17 Pro Max and the iPhone 17 Pro. The iPhone 17e came in place. The older model, the iPhone 16 was in place.
Apple holds five spots as the smartphone market slows down
This latest ranking is notable because the ranking arrives at a time when the smartphone market is struggling. Recent Counterpoint reports have highlighted a decline in sales and shipments across key markets. In the smartphone market rising memory costs and higher phone prices are putting pressure on demand.
In Europe smartphone shipments fell 10 percent year‑over‑year in the quarter hitting the lowest level in three years. China didn’t fare better: smartphone sales fell 8.6 percent during the first 30 weeks of 2026. India also recorded a 14 percent drop in smartphone sales, between weeks 14 and 31.
Counterpoint says that Apple’s unit sales went up by 5% compared to the time last year. This happened even though the overall market was shrinking. The company did well in India, Japan and the Middle East and Africa region. In South Korea sales almost doubled during the quarter.
It seems that the standard iPhone 17 has become the winner. Karn Chauhan, an analyst at Counterpoint said that the iPhone 17 remains the most sold phone in the world thanks to changes that made the difference between the iPhone 17 regular version and the iPhone 17 Pro models smaller.
Meanwhile the Pro models kept getting a boost from people who loved high-end smartphones. The Pro models also benefited from trade‑in programs, promotions and financing options. These extra offers helped the high price of the iPhones feel less heavy, for buyers.
Then there is the iPhone 17e. This model ranked seventh globally and continued to gain momentum following its launch in late March. Its presence in the top ten also demonstrates that Apple’s strategy does not rely exclusively on its most expensive models.
Samsung was the only other company to appear on the list of the top ten best-selling phones globally. The Galaxy S26 Ultra 5G took fourth place, followed by the Galaxy A07 4G, the Galaxy A17 5G, the Galaxy A17 4G, and the Galaxy S26 5G.
Collectively, the ten best-selling smartphones accounted for 26% of global sales in this category, representing a two-percentage-point increase compared to the previous year.
