India’s first space-tech unicorn has a link to Haldiram

When you think about space-tech companies, Elon Musks SpaceX or Jeff Bezoss Blue Origin probably come to mind. India now has its own unicorn in this area: Skyroot Aerospace, the company that launched the Vikram-1 last week. This space-tech company has a connection, to Haldiram.

Since its founding in 2018, Skyroot Aerospace has conducted several funding rounds; reports indicate it has raised a total of around $160 million. In one of these rounds, the Indian food giant Haldiram’s invested in the aerospace company.

That’s right: the very same Haldiram’s where you might have lunch with your family owns a stake in the company that launches rockets into orbit. According to Tracxn, Haldiram’s invested in Skyroot Aerospace during a Series B round in January 2022, although the exact investment amount has not been disclosed.

X users were surprised to discover this connection; some described it as an unexpected combination.

However, Haldirams is not the Indian company that has invested in Skyroot. Another Indian investor is Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, a rich man who has invested through his company LNM India Internet Ventures. Other companies that have invested in Skyroot include BlackRock and GIC from Singapore. The value of Skyroot Aerospace is now one point one billion dollars.

What is Skyroot Aerospace?

Skyroot Aerospace is a company that works with space technology. It was started by Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka. These two people used to work at the Indian Space Research Organisation. The main goal of Skyroot Aerospace is to launch satellites for people who need this service. The company wants to start doing this kind of work soon maybe even next year. This is similar to what SpaceX does which is a company owned by Elon Musk. On a Saturday, which was July 18 Skyroot Aerospace launched a test rocket that had a payload of 350 kilograms. This rocket went into Earth orbit. Skyroot Aerospace is the private company in India that can launch things into space. Skyroot Aerospace did something important and it is a big deal, for the company. Skyroot Aerospace is making progress in the space technology field.

Skyroot is aiming at the market for payloads that weigh under 1,000 kilograms. In this market Skyroot will face competition from US startups like Rocket Lab, Firefly Aerospace and Astra Space. It will also compete with companies in China such as i-Space, Galactic Energy and CAS Space.

In words unlike big launches where the payload is placed in a general area Skyroot is expected to take a client’s payload to a precise spot in space. This would mean the satellite is put where it needs to be. This approach would save the operator from using fuel and time to move the satellite to the place.

The market is currently valued at about $5 billion. Fast growth is expected as more companies send satellites into space. In May of this year the US company Rocket Lab said its orders had more than doubled from the year. The value of these orders reached $2.2 billion. Rocket Lab has planned launches all the way until 2029. Rocket Lab has a market value, over $43 billion.
