Patna: In recent times, rooftop as well as the revival of traditional wells have emerged as effective solutions for safe drinking water and improved sanitation in north Bihar and Dhanbad, Eklavya Prasad, an advocate of the ‘Megh Pyne Abhiyan’, as said.

What are major focuses of ‘Megh Pyne Abhiyan’

According to him, for years the ‘Megh Pyne Abhiyan’ has been working to transform water conservation into a people’s movement in the region, news agency IANS reported. Among the main focuses of the campaign are safe drinking water, rainwater harvesting, and sanitation. The focus is also on restoration of traditional water bodies, mainly in flood-prone regions.

Steps are also being taken to install rooftop rainwater harvesting systems in rural and flood-affected areas of north Bihar. The rainwater is stored in tanks, which helps the communities to get clean drinking water throughout the year.

‘Water conservation is not merely an environmental necessity’

“Water conservation is not merely an environmental necessity but a collective social responsibility. Community participation is essential to securing water resources for future generations,” IANS quoted Prasad as saying further.

As per him, the initiative has brought major relief to locals in areas affected by floods. The campaign is also helping the communities become self-dependent in managing water. Through Megh Pyne Abhiyan, the campaign is also restoring old and abandoned wells.

Pointing out that groundwater in several regions contains harmful contaminants, the revival of traditional water sources are proving to be a sustainable measures for ensure safe drinking water for the people. Prasad also urged individuals and communities to adopt rainwater harvesting practices, IANS reported further. He noted that if every school, household, and office effectively harvested rainwater, the water crisis would disappear.
