‘Guess how many seats Congress won?’: PM Modi takes a dig at Congress over MLC poll results

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday hailed the performance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its alliance partners in the four states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Karnataka.

Taking to X, the Prime Minister also took a dig at the main Opposition party, Congress, over its performance in these elections. He wrote, “MLC elections in 28 seats across four big states—Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Karnataka. Elections were held using ballot papers. Guess how many seats Congress won?”

Karnataka MLC poll results a major boost for BJP

The election results came as a major boost for the BJP and its alliance partners. In Karnataka, the saffron party won three seats, while its NDA partner, the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)), won one seat. All four seats that went to polls in the state were won by the NDA, leaving the ruling Congress without a victory.

The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance also received a boost in the Maharashtra MLC elections, leading in three of the five seats that went to polls. A total of 182 candidates contested these elections. Both the Mahayuti and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliances faced challenges from rebel candidates.

Elections were held in five constituencies as the terms of the corresponding seats were due to end on December 6.

The results could influence the political balance in the 78-member Legislative Council, where the BJP has the largest representation, with 35 members, followed by the Shiv Sena with 12. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has 10 members.

Major boost for BJP in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar

A total of 11 seats went to polls in Uttar Pradesh. Of these, the BJP won at least five seats, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) secured three, according to the results reported so far.

In Bihar, all eight seats—four Teachers’ constituencies and four Graduates’ constituencies—went to polls, with results reflecting a more fragmented political landscape. While the BJP and its NDA allies secured victories, Opposition parties and independent candidates also registered significant wins.
