Enterprise AI focus shifts from coding productivity to business execution: Report

According to a Sonata Software report, companies are focusing on streamlining overall business operations rather than simply helping developers write code faster. The report indicates that organisations are beginning to understand that faster coding does not always translate into positive business outcomes.

Furthermore, the report notes that the next step in enterprise AI adoption will depend on how effectively companies integrate rules, business knowledge, and day-to-day tasks into the AI tools they use. It is no longer just about generating code.

The report shows that in enterprise software development writing code is a small part of what needs to be done. Things like how a company is managed and organized how secure the systems are following rules and laws understanding the business area the software is for and how complicated the company is can all affect how fast technology projects get done. Also, the report says that even though a lot of companies use AI tools to help with coding they often have a time making these efforts lead to real business improvements. Software delivery and technology projects are very important, in this situation.

Citing McKinsey’s 2025 “State of AI” survey, the report indicates that although AI adoption is widespread, many organisations still struggle to scale the business value derived from these initiatives. It also references 2025 DORA research revealing that AI amplifies existing organisational systems: it accelerates workflows in high-performing organisations but magnifies inefficiencies in fragmented ones. The report concludes that while companies may deploy AI-powered coding assistants for thousands of developers, this does not always guarantee faster delivery, cost savings, or greater business responsiveness, as working methods must also be adapted. An increasing number of technology platforms are turning to code generation; what sets companies apart is their ability to control and leverage AI across all stages of the software development process. Organisations must employ AI in a way that makes sense for their business and facilitates the achievement of their goals. Companies use AI-powered coding assistants for thousands of developers; however, without modifying their workflows, they will not derive any real benefit from such implementation.

The next generation of AI-powered delivery platforms will differ from current ones. These new platforms will evolve from systems based on prompts to systems that operate based on context. This means that business knowledge—such as customer preferences, compliance standards, and working methodologies—will be available exactly when needed. This knowledge also encompasses how reusable elements are designed and how tasks are executed. With access to this information, AI can assist the enterprise as a whole rather than merely boosting the productivity of isolated individuals; these platforms will use such information to optimise processes across the entire organisation.

The report highlights three key aspects for companies to effectively leverage artificial intelligence: having access to context, being able to reuse generated intelligence, and ensuring execution within a governance framework. This means that AI systems need to follow the rules and guidelines of the company and use the knowledge that already exists inside the company to help with projects. Also, they need to make sure that what they do matches the rules and lets people watch over their work. Because of this they need ways to keep things clear ways to show how they work and they need to be watched all the time to make sure everything is working right.

The report also cited Stack Overflow’s ‘Developer Survey 2025’, which revealed that while AI adoption among developers is high, trust in the results generated by this technology remains a considerable challenge. It was noted that organisations should increasingly measure AI success using broader business indicators—such as time-to-production, compliance cycle times, staff onboarding speed, knowledge reuse, and the achievement of business outcomes—rather than relying solely on developer productivity metrics.
