Delhi Police seeks five more days in custody for Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das; SEM court reserves order
New Delhi: Delhi Police on Monday sought five more days of judicial custody for Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka. The Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court reserved its order after the hearing.

A petition seeking the release of both leaders also came before the court on Monday. The court reserved its decision on that plea as well. Das and Ranka had initially been sent to five days of judicial custody following their preventive arrest.
Police account of arrests
In a statement, Delhi Police said Das, Ranka, Ajinkya Shinde and 11 other CJP members reached Jantar Mantar through private premises on the morning of October 13. Police said authorities had removed Jantar Mantar from the list of designated protest sites.
According to the police, security personnel at the site tried to stop the group. The protesters allegedly obstructed the personnel from carrying out their duties, following which police took all 14 people into custody. Police said they preventively arrested Das, Ranka and Shinde over alleged attempts to disturb public peace and violate the law.
Shinde released on bail
Shinde subsequently secured bail on the condition that he maintain peace and good behaviour. Das and Ranka remained in custody, and police sought an extension during Monday’s hearing. The party has accused authorities of delaying the release of its two leaders. It has also questioned the rejection of guarantees submitted by four bail sureties, alleging that the reasons for rejecting them were unclear.
Report over alleged threat
Separately, Delhi Police registered a non-cognisable report (NCR) against unidentified persons on Sunday over an alleged threat to a magistrate during the bail hearing of Das and Ranka. Ratna Singh, who heads the CJP’s legal cell, said the Special Executive Magistrate informed her that the court had received a threatening message. The court’s decision on the police request for extended custody and the petition seeking the leaders’ release remained pending after Monday’s hearing.
