Deep depression triggers heavy rain in East Midnapore; fishermen barred from sea
New Delhi: Heavy rain has battered East Midnapore after a deep depression over the Bengal-Odisha coast began making landfall near Contai on Monday, prompting the district administration to enforce extensive precautionary measures.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system intensified into a deep depression before moving inland near Contai, bringing widespread rainfall and strong winds across coastal West Bengal.
In response to the deteriorating weather, the East Midnapore district administration has implemented emergency safety measures in line with IMD advisories. Fishermen have been strictly prohibited from venturing into the sea, while fishing vessels operating from Digha Mohana, Shankarpur, Saula, and Petuaghat have been instructed to remain in safe harbour until conditions improve.
Authorities have also tightened safety arrangements at popular beach destinations, including Digha, Shankarpur, Tajpur, and Mandarmani. Tourists have been barred from entering the sea due to rough surf and hazardous conditions, with police increasing surveillance across coastal areas to prevent accidents.
The IMD said the weather system was located about 30 km from Sagar Island and 70 km from Digha before landfall, and is expected to continue producing adverse weather conditions throughout the day.
A yellow alert has been issued for Kolkata and adjoining areas, while orange alerts remain in force for coastal and western districts, where isolated spells of very heavy rainfall are likely.
Wind speeds of 50–60 kmph are expected along coastal regions, with gusts of 40–50 kmph forecast for Kolkata and nearby areas.
As a precaution, the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until Friday, citing rough sea conditions and the possibility of dangerous weather associated with the deep depression.
Authorities have urged residents and visitors in coastal areas to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel or sea-related activities until weather conditions stabilise.
