Cursor introduces Rs 649 India subscription plan ahead of reported SpaceX acquisition
New Delhi: Cursor has introduced a new India-exclusive subscription called Cursor Start, priced at Rs 649 per month, making its AI coding platform more affordable for developers in the country. This launch underscores India’s emerging role in the global AI landscape and follows a trend of heightened competition between AI coding assistants.

The transfer also comes shortly after Cursor’s recent announcement that it was being acquired by the space launch provider SpaceX, which is set to close by the end of this quarter. With localised pricing, Cursor is targeting the rapidly growing developer community in India and has seen a significant rise in demand for AI-powered programming tools.
India becomes a key market for Cursor
In a tweet on X, Cursor co-founder Aman Sanger revealed that the company’s Indian user base has tripled in the last year, noting that Indian users also make more requests of their AI agents per user than anywhere else. He also termed India as Cursor’s third-largest market in the world.
The Rs 649 Cursor Start plan comes with Cursor Composer 2.5, Grok 4.5, cloud agents, the iOS app, plugins, Model Context Protocol (MCP), hooks and skills. It is a much more affordable alternative to Cursor’s $20/month Pro subscription, making it a better choice for developers who want to use AI for code writing without the higher costs of premium features.
Premium features remain locked behind Pro
Cursor Start is not an alternative to the company’s Pro plan. Advanced features like the OpenAI and Anthropic frontier models, Bugbot, Auto Mode, automations, and the Cursor SDK are only available for higher-tier subscribers.
The launch appears to indicate that AI businesses are now increasingly pricing their products more locally than globally, based on subscription fees. Cursor’s approach is similar to that of the other two companies, OpenAI and Anthropic, who both have India-specific strategies; only these two hold that price is as vital as technology in capturing developer interest. As AI adoption increases, some local pricing might be the norm for AI software businesses entering new markets.
