Commonwealth Games: Raja Muthupandi wins silver in weightlifting, extends India tally to 4 medals

New Delhi: Raja Muthupandi capped off a stellar day for India in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Sunday, July 26, by clinching a silver medal in the men’s 65kg category. The Indian lifted a total of 286kg combined in snatch and clean & jerk rounds to grab the second spot on the podium.

Muthupandi finished behind Malaysia’s Aznil Bin Bidin Muhamed, who lifted an impressive 299kg to break the Commonwealth Games record and win the gold medal in the men’s 65kg category. It was a tight tussle between the Indian and the Malaysian, however, Bidin’s experience and tenacity helped him edge Muthupandi to grab the top spot on the podium.

It was fat from an ideal start for Muthupandi in the final after he failed in his first attempt in the snatch round. However, he made a strong comeback by lifting 126kg in his next attempt. Bidin, however, was the clear favourite after executing lifts of 130kg and 133kg in the snatch round.

Muthupandi stuttered in his first attempt with 158kg in the clean & jerk round, but managed to pull off 160kg in his next attempt to become the favourite for silver. Bidin produced the best of 166kg in the clean & jerk round to take his overall lift to 299kg to secure the gold medal comfortably.

Muthupandi attempted an ambitious lift of 170kg in his final attempt in the clean & jerk category to set a Commonwealth Games record. However, he failed to execute it perfectly and settled for the second spot. Papua New Guinea’s Morea Baru claimed the bronze medal after finishing third.

The weightlifter from Tamil Nadu said he was pleased to win a silver, but not completely satisfied with his performance after bagging his maiden Commonwealth Games medal in Glasgow. “The Gold Coast Games was my first Commonwealth Games, where I finished sixth. This is my second Commonwealth Games. I could not win gold, but I have won silver. I am happy, but not completely satisfied,” said Muthupandi.
