Classes affected in several parts of Kerala and UP amid rainfall and Kanwar Yatra

New Delhi: Changing weather conditions and religious events are affecting school education in different parts of the country. In several western districts of Uttar Pradesh schools have been closed because of the large crowds during the Kanwar Yatra and the security arrangements. At the same time heavy rainfall in Kerala has disrupted normal life and affected daily activities across the state.

Authorities have announced the closure of educational institutions until August 12 in districts such as Ghaziabad Meerut and Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh because of heavy traffic and student safety concerns during the Kanwar Yatra.

School closures announced amid Kanwar Yatra and rain alert

At the same time, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning for Kerala following which schools colleges and coaching centres in more than 10 districts remained closed on August 3 because of heavy rainfall. Here is a look at the school closure decisions taken in both states.

Ghaziabad District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mander has directed that all government private and recognised schools from Classes 1 to 12 will remain closed from August 4 to August 12. The decision was taken to ensure the safety of students as the number of Kanwar pilgrims has increased and traffic diversions have made it difficult for school buses to operate.

Kanwar Yatra leads to more school shutdowns in western UP

Apart from Ghaziabad, authorities have also announced school closures in other major districts of western Uttar Pradesh. In Meerut all schools and colleges will remain closed from August 3 to August 12 because of the large number of Kanwar pilgrims in the district.

In Muzaffarnagar educational institutions will remain closed from August 3 to August 10 to ensure student safety and help manage traffic during the Kanwar Yatra.

Flood and landslide fears trigger school closures in Kerala

Meanwhile continuous heavy rain has badly affected normal life in Kerala. After a heavy rainfall warning from the India Meteorological Department the state administration declared a holiday on August 3 for schools colleges and other educational institutions in Palakkad Pathanamthitta Kannur Kozhikode Kasaragod Wayanad Malappuram Thrissur Kottayam and Idukki.

Officials said rivers and streams in these districts are overflowing and there is also a risk of landslides in several places. Students have been advised to check the latest updates before leaving for school on August 4 2026.

Officials issue fresh safety advisory for parents and students

Because of the continuing rain related risks in Kerala the restrictions are not limited to schools and colleges. According to the government order all professional colleges Anganwadi centres madrasas coaching institutes and tuition centres will also remain closed. The administration said the safety of children is the top priority and the restrictions will continue until the situation improves.

Authorities have also issued important advice for parents and students in both states. In Uttar Pradesh people have been asked to avoid highways during the Kanwar Yatra and follow traffic diversion plans issued by the administration. In Kerala people living in affected areas have been advised to stay away from waterlogged places and landslide prone locations and to contact local authorities in case of any emergency.
