BTS opt out of 2027 Grammy Awards weeks after new Asian Pop category introduced

New Delhi: Popular K-pop band has announced that they will not be submitting for consideration at the 2027 . The band were expected to compete in some of the Grammys’ major categories, including album of the year, especially after their comeback record.

The seven-member K-pop group announced their decision in a coordinated Instagram story on Wednesday (July 29).

BTS to not submit for Grammys

BTS members wrote in Korean, which translates to, “We have decided not to submit to the Grammys this year. I hope that music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language. Thank you to ARMY and everyone who is always with us.”

BTS decision comes just a little over a month after the announcement of the new category in the , The Asian pop music performance category. The addition was received with mixed reactions, but BTS is the first band to sit out the awards this year.

The Recording Academy’s description reads, “This category recognises artistic excellence in Asian pop music performances originating from or widely recognised within Asian markets, including but not limited to K-pop, J-pop and C-pop, with meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. Awards are presented to the performing artist(s).”

But the English-language lyrics would have excluded it from the new best Asian pop music performance prize. Under Grammy rules, songs nominated for the category must contain “meaningful use” of an Asian language and more than 80 per cent of the lyrics on Arirang are sung in English.

BTS mentioning both region and language in their statement hint at their concern.
