Bihar man claims he worked under Ajit Doval, police uncover alleged fake IAS racket

New Delhi: A man arrested in Bihar’s Khagaria allegedly told police that he was an undercover agent working under National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, adding a strange twist to what investigators say was a long-running impersonation case. Police have identified the accused as Mukesh Kumar Gupta, 50, who allegedly posed as an IAS officer and claimed links with senior government institutions.

The case came to light after police reached Gupta’s five-storey house in the Jamalpur area of Khagaria. Outside the property stood a Tata Safari and a black Tesla. Both vehicles drew attention as they allegedly carried “Govt of India” stickers. Police later seized the cars as part of the investigation.

What did the accused claim about Ajit Doval?

According to a police officer involved in the operation, Gupta first introduced himself as an IAS officer.

He then showed an identity card on his smartphone which described him as a “Chief Security Officer” with the Central Vigilance Commission.

Police said the claims became more unusual during questioning.

“During further questioning, he claimed that he was an undercover agent working under Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Adviser,” an officer who was part of the team said.

Police checked the identity card and concluded that Gupta was allegedly impersonating a government official.

There is no information in the police account suggesting that Gupta had any actual connection with Ajit Doval or the National Security Adviser’s office.

Phones, cards and electronic devices seized

The search of Gupta’s house led to a long list of recoveries.

Police said they found five iPhones, an Apple MacBook, an iPad, a 4TB hard disk and an 11-camera CCTV system.

Officers also recovered 20 credit cards carrying different names, along with cheque books, debit cards and Priority Pass cards.

“Five iPhones were recovered from there, four from a room and one from Gupta’s possession,” a police officer said.

Investigators said Gupta refused to unlock the devices or provide details about four of the phone numbers.

Liquor and animal horns

The case widened further after police allegedly found two swamp deer horns at the house.

Police also said they recovered 32 bottles of foreign liquor and 30 cans of beer. Bihar has a prohibition law, and a separate case was registered over the alleged liquor possession.

Gupta allegedly told police that his brother, Ajit Kumar, lived in London and sometimes brought foreign liquor for the family.

Police are now examining Gupta’s financial transactions, properties and possible assets outside Bihar.

A senior officer said investigators have received information about assets outside the state and abroad. Police have indicated that more arrests could follow as the inquiry expands.
