BCCI CoE under scanner after Jasprit Bumrah’s injury leaves selection committee miffed

New Delhi: The Ajit Agarkar-led senior Indian selection committee has been left miffed with the medical team at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) after its perceived negligence in the handling of senior pacer latest injury. Bumrah was ruled out of India’s squad for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka on Monday due to a knee issue.

He was replaced in the squad by Jammu & Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi. Bumrah’s injury management has once again brought the CoE under the scanner amid a glaring disconnect between the medical team at the facility and the Agarkar-led selection panel. As per a report in PTI, the selection panel was initially made to believe that Bumrah would be available for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.

However, it emerged later that his injury was more serious than expected, leading to his sidelining from Test squad. Bumrah is yet to fully recover from his knee issue and has thus been ruled out of the Sri Lanka series, which is set to get underway on August 15.

As per PTI, chief selector Agarkar on Monday held a meeting with the top officials of the BCCI CoE, including VVS Laxman, who is the head of the facility. The meeting was conducted to discuss the injury management of centrally contracted players amid growing concerns.

No official head of sports science at BCCI CoE

This comes at a time when the BCCI CoE is functioning without an official head of sports science after the exit of former head Nitin Patel. After Patel’s departure, Dhananjay Kaushik is currently serving as the interim head of sports science at the BCCI CoE. While there are no doubts over his credentials, the functioning of the team has come under the scanner amid recent lapses.

The functioning of the team has been questioned despite the Centre of Excellence being laced with all modern facilities and amenities required to ensure its smooth functioning. Besides, Bumrah, the handling of injuries of the likes of Harshit Rana, Nitish Reddy and Washington Sundar, among others, has also led to questions.
