Barcelona fined by Spanish Football Association over poaching Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez
New Delhi: The Spanish Football Association has fined FC Barcelona over an illegal approach for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez. Atletico Madrid had filed a complaint with the Spanish FA over Barcelona trying to poach Alvarez from the club during the summer transfer window earlier this year.

Atletico Madrid had accused Barcelona of approaching the Argentine striker without formally notifying them in writing about their move. The Spanish Football Association has now fined Barcelona 602 euros over Atletico Madrid’s complaint.
Atletico Madrid also complained to FIFA regarding the illegal approach made for their player by Barcelona. However, the world football governing body declared it had no jurisdiction over the case.
Alvarez was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona in the summer transfer window and refused to train with Atletico after making his intentions clear. The Argentine striker wanted to force a move to the Catalan giants, but Atletico refused to let him go.
Alvarez has a contract at Atletico Madrid which runs till 2030 and the club wanted a significant fee to let the striker leave, which Barcelona couldn’t afford to pay. In the end, Alvarez had to stay at Atletico after the move collapsed.
Julian Alvarez apologises to Atletico Madrid fans
Alvarez recently apologised to the Atletico Madrid fans for his actions during the summer transfer window. The Argentina striker, who has been frequently booed by the club supporters, received a standing ovation from them after scoring the winner in his club’s victory against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday.
The win placed Atletico Madrid just two points behind leaders Barcelona on the La Liga points table. Alvarez apologised to the fans after his side’s win, stating that he would also have been angry if he was a fan.
“It was a mistake. I understand why the fans are angry. If I were a fan, I’d be angry too. Especially given how they’ve supported me since I arrived,” said Alvarez.
Alvarez joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in a move worth over 80 million pounds in 2024 and has since scored 51 goals in 115 matches for the Spanish club.
