Army officer’s wife booked in Jammu for leaking sensitive data to foreign agents

New Delhi: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case against the wife of a senior Indian Army officer for allegedly sharing sensitive details with foreign intelligence operatives, including handlers linked to China, who approached her posing as researchers and academicians.

Originally hailing from Telangana, the woman is currently living in the Gandhi Nagar area of Jammu. Authorities suspect she was drawn into an elaborate intellectual trap without realising that the individuals she was interacting with were foreign intelligence agents rather than genuine scholars.

According to preliminary inputs gathered by intelligence agencies, the operatives reached out to her with requests to write articles and research pieces for publication. Initially, the discussions were limited to general topics like the environment and regional geopolitics. Over time, however, the handlers gradually shifted the focus toward subjects involving defence, operational strategies, and matters of national security.

FIR filed under official secrets act

Following specific inputs from a reliable source, the police booked her under FIR No. 290/2026 at Gandhi Nagar Police Station. The charges include Sections 3 and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, which address the unlawful collection, retention, and transmission of protected information detrimental to state security. In addition, she has been booked under Sections 152 and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Sources indicated that she came under scrutiny for allegedly collecting and transmitting sensitive documents, photographs, and electronic files that directly impact the security of the State. Investigators suspect that these exchanges were carried out through encrypted communication platforms with individuals tied to foreign spy agencies.

Probe underway to trace operatives

The police report specifically flags contacts from China and other foreign nations, noting that the woman’s interactions may have compromised strategic information, whether knowingly or unknowingly.

Officials have not yet revealed the exact nature of the documents involved, the specific identities of the foreign handlers, or the scale of the compromise, as the investigation remains active. Investigating officers are now working to establish the digital trail and determine precisely how the operatives first established contact with her.
