Apple’s OLED MacBook Pro: What to Expect

Apple could be preparing for one of the biggest changes to the MacBook Pro lineup in years. The company is reportedly planning an event on October 27, where it may introduce its first MacBook Pro with an OLED touchscreen.

If the reports are accurate, the upcoming laptop could bring several notable changes, including a new display, a lighter design and the Dynamic Island. The company is also expected to offer the laptop in 14-inch and 16-inch versions.

OLED display and touchscreen

The biggest change could be the move from mini-LED to OLED. Unlike conventional displays, OLED panels can switch individual pixels off completely, allowing them to deliver deeper blacks, stronger contrast and richer colours. These improvements could appeal particularly to photographers, video editors and other creative professionals.

However, OLED displays can sometimes offer lower peak brightness than mini-LED panels, meaning there could be a trade-off despite the overall improvement in display quality.

The touchscreen could be an even bigger change. Apple has avoided adding touchscreens to its Macs for decades, but the new MacBook Pro is reportedly set to support touch-based interactions. Users could tap and swipe directly on the display, similar to how they interact with an iPad.

Apple is said to view touch as an additional input method rather than a replacement for the keyboard and trackpad. A reinforced hinge could also be introduced to prevent the display from moving excessively when users touch it.

Hints of this approach are reportedly visible in macOS Golden Gate, which includes direct touch input in Sidecar and an iPhone-style pull-to-refresh option in apps such as Safari and Mail.

New design and hardware

The traditional notch could reportedly disappear and be replaced by the Dynamic Island, bringing a design element already familiar to iPhone users to the Mac. It could also help Siri AI offer a more consistent experience across Apple’s devices.

The new MacBook Pro is expected to be lighter than existing models and could arrive in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes. This would represent the first major redesign since the M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pro models launched in 2021.

Apple may also stick with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips rather than introducing M6 Pro or M6 Max versions. MacRumors says this could allow the company to launch the laptop without waiting for the M7 series. A second-generation model featuring M7 Pro and M7 Max chips is reportedly tipped for late 2027 or early 2028.

Expected price

Pricing could be another major talking point. Apple raised Mac prices in June, with the 14-inch M5 Pro MacBook Pro currently starting at Rs 239900 and the 16-inch model at Rs 359900.

The OLED touchscreen version is expected to sit above those prices, although Apple has not revealed an official figure yet.

The October 27 event could also reportedly include a new OLED iPad mini, a 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip and an iMac powered by the M6 chip.
