Apple briefly removes Telegram from App store over child abuse content, restores app soon after

New Delhi: Apple briefly removed Telegram from its App Store in multiple countries after identifying content that violated its policies on child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Later, after Telegram deleted the content and blocked the account, the messaging app re-appeared in the App Store, reported by Reuters.

This caused Telegram to be temporarily unavailable for download on iPhones and iPads for a short time for new users. Existing users of the app didn’t experience any problems, since the problem was only with new downloads. Telegram later confirmed on X that reports of its disappearance had been “greatly exaggerated”.

Apple Cites App Store Policy Violation

Apple pulled the app after the review revealed content that violated its App Store rules against child sexual abuse material. Telegram has responded promptly by deleting the content and suspending the user, and the app has been restored, the company added.

Apple and Telegram did not release any details of the incident. The abrupt disappearance had sparked much speculation online before Apple clarified the situation.

Telegram Faces Growing Global Scrutiny

The incident follows Telegram’s growing regulatory scrutiny across multiple countries, as well as its founder, Pavel Durov. Durov has consistently rejected any wrongdoing and said Telegram is actively fighting against harmful content and user privacy and freedom of expression.

Telegram has also faced scrutiny in France since their owner, Durov, was arrested last year for allegedly allowing criminal content on the platform. Separately, Australia’s online safety regulator has launched legal action against the company, alleging it failed to remove violent extremist content. Telegram has rejected those claims, stating that it has blocked more than 150,000 terrorism-related communities this year.
