The incident took place a day after Hemanth allegedly entered a classroom at Rapthadu Zilla Parishad High School in Anantapur district and attacked two girls with a running chainsaw while lessons were underway.
Teacher recalls horror inside classroom
The attack took place around 10:30 am on October 31 at the school in Raptadu village. Students and teachers were inside the classroom when the accused allegedly entered with the machine switched on.
A teacher, Rajeshwari, who witnessed the incident, said the sound of the chainsaw was initially mistaken for noise from construction work taking place on the school premises. “Classes were ongoing. The first period was completed, and the classes were continuing. All the children were studying,” she said.
She added that the accused switched on the machine outside before entering the classroom. Teachers initially thought a worker had come to carry out some work, but he suddenly moved towards the students.
The injured girls have been identified as Geethika and Lakshmi. Both were first taken to the Government General Hospital in Anantapur for emergency treatment.
One student shifted to Bengaluru for treatment
One of the students suffered particularly severe injuries, including the complete severing of her right hand. Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav said she also sustained injuries to her neck and face, skull and rib fractures, and damage to blood vessels.
Doctors at Anantapur hospital administered 10 units of blood to control the bleeding before she was shifted to a private hospital in Bengaluru for advanced treatment.
A medical report submitted by Anantapur GGH superintendent D Malleswari recorded multiple injuries, including fractures, tendon damage and several deep wounds across the girl’s scalp, face, neck and upper body.
