All eyes on PK, Ashutosh Tiwari as Bankipur, Datia, Manjalpur await bypoll verdict on Monday

New Delhi: The results of assembly by-elections held in Bihar’s Bankipur, Madhya Pradesh’s Datia and Gujarat’s Manjalpur will be declared on Monday. Voting for all three seats took place on July 30.

The focus will remain on Bankipur and Datia, which are traditional Bharatiya Janata Party strongholds. Bankipur was previously represented by BJP national president Nitin Nabin, while Datia is the political bastion of former Madhya Pradesh home minister Narottam Mishra.

Datia prestige battle

The BJP denied Mishra a ticket for the bypoll. He had lost the seat to Congress candidate Rajendra Bharti in the 2023 Madhya Pradesh Assembly election.

The by-election became necessary after a Delhi court sentenced Bharti to three years in prison in a cheating case in April. The conviction led to the termination of his Assembly membership.

Mishra’s supporters clashed with police after the BJP denied him the ticket. The former minister later became emotional and promised full support to BJP candidate Ashutosh Tiwari.

The main contest is between Tiwari and Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh. While the outcome will not threaten the BJP government, analysts believe it could influence the standing of both parties before the 2028 Assembly election.

District Election Officer Swapnil Wankhede said counting would start at 8 am with postal ballots, followed by EVM votes.

Kishor enters Bankipur

Bankipur recorded a voter turnout of about 34.16 per cent, according to the Election Commission. The seat fell vacant after Nabin resigned as an MLA following his election to the Rajya Sabha.

The BJP fielded Neeraj Kumar Sinha, while Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor entered the contest. RJD candidate Rekha Kumari is also in the race.

Kishor’s candidature and extensive campaign turned the election into a difficult contest for the BJP. He has claimed that he will defeat the ruling party. Such a result could cause a major political setback for the BJP and Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary.

Manjalpur sees direct fight

Manjalpur recorded a turnout of about 37.5 per cent. The bypoll became necessary after the death of veteran BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Yogesh Patel on June 2, 2026.

Patel had represented the constituency for decades. The seat now has a direct contest between BJP candidate Satish Govindbhai Patel and Congress nominee Bhikhabhai Rabari.
