ABVP Workers Clash With Police, Several Detained During Jharkhand Bandh

In the state-wide bandh called by the BJP, ABVP workers protested against recruitment irregularities of JPSC and JSSC in Ranchi, during which some ABVP activists were arrested.

Protests against the alleged irregularities in the recruitment tests being conducted by the State of Jharkhand saw fresh confrontations between police and student activists in Ranchi on Tuesday. Multiple members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) were arrested during a protest to Jharkhand Assembly.

The latest clash between the officers and the protesters occurred one day after thousands of job aspirants of the JPSC and JSSC were tear-gassed, faced water cannon and baton charges as they made their way to the state Assembly.

The ABVP workers had set a plan to ‘gherao’ (surround) the Jharkhand Assembly during this protest. Police arrested several activists in a march near the old premises of Vidhan Sabha.

In the midst of the volatile scene, some of the protesters were spotted mounting the police vehicles, and slogans were shouted as police were striving to break the crowd.

The ABVP has supported the demands of students who are protesting against the alleged irregularities in recruitment exams being conducted by Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).

The student movement has been continuing over allegations of irregularities in recruitment examinations. Demonstrators have called for cancelation of the JSSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) exam as well as an independent investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and changes in the process of appointments.

Thousands of aspirants on Monday marched towards the Assembly and broke a number of barricades. The police fired water cannon and tear gas shells at the protesters near Jagannathpur Temple.

The clash left injuries, with protesters claiming several students were injured in the police action.

The latest protest was also coinciding with a statewide shutdown, called by BJP to protest the police action towards the students during the Assembly march on Monday.

Jharkhand minister Irfan Ansari lashed out at the BJP’s bandh call, alleging that the party was trying to hijack a movement which had been spearheaded by students.

The state government is “in favour of peaceful protest” but the BJP was using the student movement “for their political agenda”, Ansari said.

Student agitation has now emerged as a big political issue in Jharkhand as students continue to demand accountability, transparency and change of the recruitment examination system.
