Google to Retire Assistant After 10 Years, Gemini Takes Over on September 4

The last days for Google Assistant have officially started. The company is saying a goodbye to its voice assistant, which has been around for ten years. Google has reportedly started sending emails to Android users telling them that Assistant will start to disappear from devices that work with it beginning September 4. As Google Assistant is slowly removed Gemini will become the AI assistant taking over all tasks from “Hey Google” voice commands to AI conversations, on devices that support it.

Google has started sending emails to Android users. The message says that Google Assistant will begin to disappear from devices starting September 4. Even though people had heard about the end of Google Assistant for months, these emails are the time Google has told users a specific date for the change, on mobile phones. The company says the process will happen in stages over weeks. The time it takes depends on the device, the country and the user’s language.

In the email Google says that Google Assistant is being “retired” and that Gemini—its generation AI-powered assistant—is becoming the assistant experience on Android. When the update arrives on a device people will no longer be able to use Google Assistant or go back to it. Instead saying “Hey Google”. Pressing the power button for a long time will start Gemini.

Goodbye to Google Assistant

Google Assistant was first available in 2016. Since then, Google Assistant has been a part of Android phones, smart speakers, TVs, smartwatches and other devices that are connected to the internet. We have known for a while that Google Assistant would be replaced by Gemini. Now some emails say that Google Assistant will soon be replaced by Gemini. Google Assistant will not be used anymore. Gemini will take the place of Google Assistant.

Google said Google Assistant would still work on Android until March 2026. They first thought it would stop working by the end of 2025. Now Google is going to start taking Google Assistant away from Android devices that can use it. This will start on September 4. It will not happen at once. Google will do it a little at a time over the few weeks. Google Assistant will also be removed from things, then phones. In the email Google says that if users have Gemini as their assistant, it will also be the assistant, on compatible Wear OS smartwatches and supported headphones. Also reports say that Android Auto sessions that come from a smartphone will also change to Gemini.

However, some devices will continue to use Google Assistant for the time being. Cars with Google built-in are expected to retain Assistant beyond September 4. Google has also confirmed that Gemini will eventually come to Google TV devices, Google Home smart speakers, and smart displays, though it has not announced a timeline for this. It is also unclear when the transition will occur for the Pixel Tablet when it is docked.

Google has also updated its Assistant support pages with a new notice stating that Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices. The company claims that Gemini can perform many of the same tasks while offering more natural conversations and advanced AI capabilities.

Google Assistant will keep working on devices that do not support Gemini. It will also work in places where Gemini is not available. For people who can use Gemini, the change to Gemini starts on September 4. Google Assistant is switching to Gemini for these users. The change to Gemini is happening for users on September 4.
